Eames House

One of my architecture teachers once told me that architecture is often underappreciated because when architecture is successful, it creates a seamless experience that provides the user with comfort, ease and functionality. Therefore, more often than not, good architecture is ignored. On the other hand, bad architecture draws attention to itself with complaints like the ceiling's too low, there's not enough natural light, the space feels cramped, etc.

I always thought that I agreed with her because it did seem true - nobody usually notices good architecture unless it's built by a famous architect, is historical or ancient, or is pointed out by a an architect friend/teacher/colleague.

But after visiting the Eames House, the home of the great American designers and architects, Charles and Ray Eames, I think that Great Architecture, in addition to providing comfort, ease, and functionality, creates spaces that people want to be in. They're spaces where you linger on your way to class or work. Spaces where you retreat to when you seek solace and refreshment. Spaces that you long to be in because there's just that something special there that you can't quite put your finger on. Spaces that actually enhance your quality of life.

As I wandered around the Eames House, peeked in the windows, and ran through the meadow, I said to Dean, "Wow, this is the kind of place where I want to raise our children!" I felt a little like Alice being transported to the fantastical world of Wonderland. I fell in love with all the little details of the house, like its proximity to the ocean, the presence of nature in, around, and surrounding the house, and all the little touches of whimsy and wonder that delighted you around each corner. What a perfect place for a young child (or children of all ages) to exercise their imagination and play!

Each window into the home of Charles and Ray revealed moments of their creative lives together. They loved to read, and throw parties, and be with and around nature, and make toys and films and furniture. They had created for themselves a space where "work, play, life, and nature co-existed." Their home was modern and tasteful, but with so many touches of warmth and friendliness. You could tell that this was a home where life was treasured, shared, and lived to the fullest.

the doorbell!

I hope someday to have a home like that too.

Happy New Year 2011!

Happy New Year to you! Can you believe it's 2011 already? Hope you rang in the New Year in style last night. As for us, we braved the cold (LA standards) and made the drive down to Long Beach to watch the fireworks over the Queen Mary.

I wasn't able to get my act together before Christmas to send out Christmas cards this year, but I did manage to make and send out New Year's cards! I found a nice photo we took on Christmas Day, photoshopped it a bit to make it look like a vintage polaroid, and put the whole thing together in Illustrator. We got them printed out as 4"x6" pictures at Costco, and after trimming them down to the appropriate polaroid size (3.5" x 4.25" apparently), we were good to go! I paired them with some luxe pale gold envelopes for a festive touch.

May your new year be filled with beauty, joy, and endless inspiration!

Paul Smith for Evian

I spent this past Saturday hanging out at the Farmer's Market at Third & Fairfax with Dean, my sis + Billy, my cousin, her boyfriend, and my aunt. We visited shops, sampled different foods, and wandered the market leisurely.

I spied these beautiful Evian bottles at a French cafe at the market, and I immediately HAD to have one! Luckily, the shop across from the cafe just happened to have them for sale (I'm sure it was strategic on their part). My sis and I both snatched one up. We were quite shocked by the hefty price tag of $6.99/bottle + CRV, but we do hope to reuse them as vases in our homes. :) The limited edition bottles were designed by British fashion designer Paul Smith and come with five different colored caps. I got a blue cap!

They remind me of Easter eggs. :)

LA Renegade Fair Recap

This was my first time attending the Renegade Fair, and I had such a blast! For those unfamiliar with the Renegade Fair, it's a "large-scale DIY event featuring hundreds of independent artists and their unique handmade items." The participants included some of the best indie-craft artists and designers, so I left the fair feeling very much inspired.

Some details and picture tidbits:

fabric-covered button barrettes

letterpress stationery

felt crowns!

canvas bow tote bags

felt beards + moustaches (one booth even had a drawing for a giant stuffed moustache!)

Here are the goodies/freebies I picked up at the fair:

clockwise from top left: Renegade Fair guide, bookmark, Etsy bumper sticker, wildflower seeds from the Urban Craft Center, random stickers + buttons, tote bag from Threadless, tote bag from Yelp, free shirt + sharpies also from Threadless (we spun a wheel and won them!), and oodles of fun business cards!

My only purchase from the day - an art print by Jen Skelley:

I love this beautiful print and the playful, whimsical style of her illustrations. I loved it so much, in fact, that I promptly went to IKEA right after the fair to purchase a frame for it so that I could display it immediately! :D

Since we were downtown (and we don't often get a chance to drive over there), we also made a stop in the Fashion District to purchase some fabric from the ginormous fabric store, Michael Levine. This store is like the mother of all fabric stores! They have everything you could possibly need for your sewing projects, but my favorite thing about them is their huge selection of cotton prints. They have everything from their own Michael Levine brand fabric for $2/yard to designer fabrics like Liberty of London for a whopping $38/yard (stored behind a locked glass case!).

my loot

I think I'm feeling crafty from all the inspiration + supplies I gathered this weekend! :)

Minted Inspiration Board

Remember those wedding invitations I designed for Minted a while back? Well, in addition to the invitation suite, I also created an inspiration board to go along with the invitation. The inspiration board is meant to allow designers to really flesh out the concept or vision behind the invitation design and also helps to inspire and guide brides as they plan out all the details of their wedding!

Anyway, I was really excited when Minted posted my inspiration board for my invitation, "Better Together" on their blog! This is the first time they've featured inspiration boards on their site, and I was so pleased they chose mine first! :) Check it out.

Visited the sewing/knitting store, Purl in SoHo (and picked up some goodies there!):

When you walk in, it really feels like you're being transported into this magical paper wonderland.

I love the emphasis on paper throughout the store - the wedding invitation section featured this wedding gown made out of paper!

Pain au Chocolat :)
High Line Park
I love the juxtaposition of nature vs. manmade
